Finishing with Safari

Right, for some unclear reason I was still browsing with Safari. With 10+ tabs open and some flash content running it turned out that Safari was using 700-800 Mb RAM with large variety of apps running in browser. So switching to Chrome as we speak. Seems memory usage is smaller with it and browsing quicker. Outrageous use of resources by Safari.

Cleared browsing history in Safari and gradually I also get back harddrive space. Tried to quit it but now its just beachballing, probably cleaning after it self right now as free space amount on harddrive is constantly rising.

Damn spindump

I now switched to 13" MacBook and used Migration Assistant to move old system to new one. For some reason many apps became unresponsive and spindump process was running and consuming processor time.
Disabled spindump for now to see if that helps abit.

Disable sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.spindump.plist

Time machine errors

So after few months of successful backups it just stopped to work. Investigated the issue and it seems that Time Machine is unable to determine which are "System files and folders" that is by default defined as exception in Options.
From log perspective it means you get lines like
"FindSystemFiles Finding system files..."
"FindSystemFiles FSOpenIterator failed"
to Console and backup hangs.

This option can be replaced with excluding next items

/Applications
/bin
/Library
/private
/sbin
/System
/usr

like instructed here.

Also my MacBook got new 7200 rpm harddrive. Old one started to make weird noises. Its "hello, I am going to break soon > do something" type of noise. You know it, when you hear it!

Mail really screwed me in the ***!

I created another account to Mail with different sending address in Mail. Mailbox was duplicate to existing POP3 account. I did it because I needed sender email address I had defined to signing certificate. All worked fine until emails getting in started to appear as dublicate in Mail. Decided to remove accout that was created with this email address defined in certificate. Bang, all data from orgininal POP3 Inbox was also gone.

Now trying to recover with Prosoft Engineering Data Rescue II

Still no sleep

Did fresh install and symptoms remain the same. This means that error is somewhere between motherboard and disk, since my disk went sleep on another computer and their disk went to sleep very well on my computer also. And I spent whole yesterday evening and night almost copying data and archiving.

No sleep

My 13" MacBook is not going to sleep anymore :( When I close it, then indicator light never goes to this slow blinking mode and it runs until battery gets empty. When I open LCD, screen is blank and nothing happens. Only way is to press power button for long and time do hard reset.

Called to service and they suggested
1. close all programs when going to sleep - maybe some program crashes on sleep?
Result - no change

2. reinstall OSX - did acrhive install
Result, with 10.4.6 it went sleep 50% of times but when udpated to 10.4.10 everthing is the same

3. get computer here, we will spend some weeks on it - no go I have to work with it.

Nokia E70 and apple

Apple has no support for Nokia in iSync still on 10.4 updates. 10.4.9 overwrite my settings and had to intro Nokia phone to mac once again my self. Old instructions are not compatible with 10.4.9 iSync. Luckily I found new instructions quickly and now phone is in sync again with my mac.

Pair your remote

Macs are beautiful for normal folks and also thieves. That is why Orbicule has developed theftsernsor that makes stealing at least quite noisy.

I was working normally and all of a sudden my mac went to sleep. There was just a quick flash of Apple remote shown. It turned out that if you don't have your remote paired with your MacBook, then any remote can control you machine.

- Pairing with "Menu" and "Play/Pause" button simultaneously for 5 sec.
- Sleepmode when "Play/Pause" pushed for some time.

Firefox not really there...

After having Firefox as browser for a while I have few times visited Safari again...
At one moment Firefox just does not accept link clicks anymore. Strange behavior.
Spell check is certainly cool feature! Miss that for Skype.

Recent find is Quicksilver - search and command! See great potential there

And installed Growl again, just to give it another testtry.

And... Parallels BETA totally mixes windows and os X :D

Now few weeks on MacBook already. Impressive!
- better wifi
- moving from mac to another over firewire really easy
- very bright screen

Running win XP on Parallels but with 1Gb started to slow down when XP running (with 150mb RAM). Now added 512Mb and happy again. Very fast sleep, both with XP and no hickups! Beautiful.

If you like Spotlight, you must love Inquisitor - addon to Safari.

With Powerbook G4, MacBook and MacBook Pro there is an issue that they get pretty hot. Basically impossible to hold on your legs when doing something processor intensive.
I googled for few tricks:

Mail keeps asking pop3 password even if saved

Seems to be familiar problem for most
So it seems that Mail does not recognize the fact that there is something wrong with network. It prompts the same "enter password" dialog saying that you password was rejected when there is bad network connection.
For user it seems that your password is wrong or Keychain has lost your password etc...

I changed email retrieve interval, lets see what happens.

UPDATE: so it seems that changing interval from 5 to 15 minutes did the job.

Orinoco wireless card working again

With Mac Powerbook G4 sometimes wireless coverage is pretty weak. The problem is that antennas are in aluminium case and external plastic stripes are not always enough to catch weak signal far away. Then I use my Lucent (Orinoco) WaveLan card that has small antenna.

In Panther Sourceforge drivers worked just fine, but not in Tiger. There are not too many drivers available, few drivers for which you have to pay $15-19.

I accidentally found wireless driver for my Lucent (Orinoco) silver card from download page select project development page. Choose Beta 6 for Tiger from here.

Just in case they loose the fail or change the page here is the driver in my server.

...about how I woke up my Orinoco RG-1000 and configured it to support the PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) and work together with Nokia M5122.
About tools - for mac I used AirportBaseStationConfig utility and for windows Freebase and Orinoco AP manager 1, 1.90 that has latest build of RG-1000 firmware.

Updated my RG-1000 firmware since it seems that existing version on RG did not support PPPoE. I had to use crossed ethernet cable and to set IP on computer to 153.69.254.1 after I put RG to force reload mode. Firmware update was also needed since after I configured it to call via PPPoE it did not allow me to access it anymore since it restarted in every 5 sec.
With combination of using Freebase and AP manager I succeded to upgrade the firmware. Not clear how I exactly did it.

Then enabled ADSL (PPPoE) and entered username/password. I have the slow "you have to log in" ADSL. Now RG-1000 keeps connection up all the time. Enabled DHCP and NAT. Internal IP set to 192.168.0.1 and same to DHCP router section.

Notice that when PPPoE active, lower led on RG-1000 is on!

All macusers know the darkened picture with many languages on it, when OS X crashes.

Now I got the picture above, any ideas about what does it mean? Error message is pasted over everything.

iDVD hangs but finishes

Made a 1h 20 min movie in iMovie (6.0.2). Sent it to iDVD (6.0.2). Choosed a theme and started to burn DVD.
Menus were created and then iDVD hanged. Just shows that Encoding Audio and that is all!

Processor load is at max, Activity Monitor shows also that iDVD takes about 60-80% of processor time while being (Not responding). From View > Inspect process shows some development, iDVD interface gives you spinning wheel of death :P

It is possible to see open files and ports. Since there are files coming to that list constantly I presume we still have some action going on. So it is better to wait?!

UPDATE: All good things come to those who can wait! So it took 10h to encode 1h 20 min movie to MPEG2 from DV captured from camera (1.5Ghz Power G4, 1G RAM). Pure processor time taken from Activity Monitor was about 5h. Most of the time iDVD was "Not responding" and at the very end it woke up again and interface was accessible again.
Just in case I had it burning image rather than straight DVD. iDVD created DVD image and then at the end it hanged again. This time no remarkable processor load.
Burned DVD with Disk Utility and after it was finished and DVD worked fine, then quit iDVD.

Average user... mhh hard to belive he would wait all that time. No progress indication etc.. Does Apple has any testing for its software at all?

iMovie or not to iMovie

Well, it looks simple and stupid at the same time. I am used to PC version of Adobe Premier in earlier life, now tried to do something more with iMovie.
There are some issues I found and some other people have found. My issues:
- Titles... it is not clear for user whether the title duration is per title in title set or in total
- Fast/Slow/Reverse video effect is not working (no picture after apply)?
- Themes are not working - plays well in preview mode but after rendering screen remains black?
- Only time indication on playhead, impossible to figure out what the zoomlevel is. Why not to add timecode to timeline divisions?
- Crashes alot, seems very poor quality code.

All in all it seems that this software is made by stupid people for stupid people or something!

I will go for Final Cut Pro in future mac video projects.

Nokia E70 married with OS X 10.4 Tiger

Finally I got Nokia E70. This model was delayed about 3 months and still there are bugs in it.
1. When using wifi with browser it reboots regularly.
2. Sometimes left keypad does not work when opened to qwerty mode.

BUT the main question was how to sync the phone with mac and how I can use the phone to dial 3G or GPRS?

With previous 6820 I used PhoneDirector from Macmedia but they dont have e70 in their lists. So then away in my summercottage with minimal GPRS coverage I googled with E70.

AND found few very useful guides about the subject.

Ross Barkman has a collection of dialing scripts for new phones. I got mine working with "Nokia GPRS scripts" and used "Nokia GPRS 57.6k CD1" and it works. Connection does not drop nor phone is not restarted (like with Ericsson t39 original script).

Ross had few external links and one of them pointed to site with syncronization instructions. Also to N70 instrcutions

In short, do this:
1) Edit your MetaClasses.plist file:
- Open a Finder window and press command+shift+g and paste in this line:
/Applications/iSync/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/ or use open command in terminal open -e /Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/MetaClasses.plist
- You may want to make a backup of this file (just copy + paste it into the same folder)

2) Open the file in your favorite text editor, and add this info for the E70:

NOTE: I copied the icon for one of the other phones and renamed it to “NOKE70.tiff", but you don’t need to do this if you don’t want to, just pick one of the existing tiff files in the same folder as the .plist file.

3) Save the .plist file and restart iSync.

4) Add a device, it should find your E70 and allow you to sync using the built in sync software on the phone!

UPDATE: I noticed that this wasn’t adding the alarms for my meetings at the right time - they were all set without the timezone offset they should have had, so with some further digging, I figured out how to fix this:

1) Open Finder, hit command+shift+g and paste in this path:
/Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/PhoneFamilySync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/ or in terminal open -e /Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/PhoneFamilySync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/PhoneConduitv2-serie60-SyncML.plist

2) Open the file (not the backup copy) in your favorite text editor, and search for this node:

and change the ‘false’ to ‘true’ so it should look like this:

Save the file and relaunch iSync, and all your meeting alarms should now be the correct time. Since I had already synced, it wouldn’t resync all the events I already had, so you may need to remove the meetings from the phone and resync, but be careful, as removing the events from the phone will remove them from your calendar next time you sync! (I’m not sure of a good way to get around this, so if anyone has ideas, lets hear them)

Notes:
- This only seems to work when syncing from the computer to the phone. If I choose sync in the phone, it tries to connect but then just disconnects without syncing or a warning.
- AddressBook contact pictures are also synced to the phone.
- If all of this is too much for you, or you can’t figure it out, you can always just buy this plugin from NovaMedia for €10

NB OSX 10.4.7 update removes all your modifications, so you need to do them again after upgrade.

IMAP, sent and drafts folder in Mail

So I was using Entourage. Few things, where Entourage did not meet my requirements:
- it shows arrived dates as weekdays for last week, really annoying
- it places my signature always at the end of reply mails body
- there was something odd with IMAP folders. I created a subfolder and moved few folder under that and they dissapeared.

Now I switched to Mac Os X Mail:
- problem with IMAP, once you get your imap folders to mac and try to save a draft or look for sent emails... no way, draft is not saved and sent emails are missing.

SOLUTION: select your drafts folder and go to Mailboxes menu and select "Use This Mailbox for" and select drafts. Do the same for Sent! It works.

There was an error joining to wireless network

Have you ever got this message from you apple? In some occasions with 64bit WEP encryption (128 is ok), there might be problems. You enter the right key, but it will not connect. I got this message several times with my powerbook. Without encryption everything worked fine, but with WEP 64 - error! Even if you delete the key from keychain, nothing wokred.
I searched forums and wikis, googeled a lot. And finally in one page (dont remember anymore where) there was a hint - use dollar sign $ in the beginning of your wep key. Stange, but it works.

Hope you find it when googeling for answer :P

Extreme desktop performance

Your computer desktop! You will visit it every day, same repetitive tasks managing windows, applications etc...

Standard MS windows users are doomed. People on Linux have a bit better destiny, they have multiple workspaces. Mac users do pretty well, Exposé gives them easy environment to work with multiple applications and windows. But still, for poweruser, this is not enough! Waisting time opening and closing applications and windows, yak...

My dream next generation desktop would look like this.

The outer wall of cylinder, is a desktop space, the square is visible part of desktop. It is possible to move cylinder with your mouse equipped with gyro chip. Once you lift your hand with the mouse, the cylinder appears and is semi-transparent and you are able to see which windows you must scroll in front of you. With simple mouse movement to left or right the cylinder spins. Once you put down your mouse, the scrolling environment disappears and desktop is stopped in the position when mouse hit the table. In idle desktop would act as a screensaver rotatiting slowly or be automatically scrolling to and highlightind windows with latest information. The radius of cylinder is configurable.

Sorry, I have been away from this blog for a while. Still using mac dough :)
In the meanwhile I have upgraded to Tiger 10.4.2 and then performed clean Tiger installation. Upgrade was not stable, clean install is basically okay (occasional VLC crashes and issues with wifi networks sometimes).

Now try to get latest news in more timely manner. Also other hardware related news, since I now work with hardware and peripherals every day.

Yeah, my mac trial period is about to end. Three months of pleasure and interesting times. Everybody are envious and want to touch it, it really works and helps me to more things. Soon I will gather all software, that I have downloaded and found useful.

Sleep

Few remarks, which I have found recently..
1. Sleep - for some reason it goes to sleep slower and sometimes, when it wakes up, mousepad is not working. I can change applications, but cannot write or move mouse. I have noticed some strange behavoiur concerning my bluetooth mouse. Especially when I put it to sleep with bluetooth mouse attached. Nothing in logfiles. Sometimes the situation resolves with waiting but I also had to restart few times.
2. DHCP - in few cases it has not updated IP address if connected over wireless interface. Restart has been a cure in this situation. Seems that some address lease or similar issues are reason for that.

Other than that all is working fine and I will stay with Panther 10.3.9 for a while and am not upgrading to Tiger yet.

Orinoco card not working

Today morning - no network. Started to investigate, PC had wireless network, after some trying also Airport on mac woke up, but my main network interface on mac, Orinoco card connected to antenna and remote 3Mb external link, was down.
System log said:
May 4 07:53:13 localhost kernel: org_noncontiguous_WirelessDriver: _wi_receivePacket(), bad status

I am using drivers from Sourceforge.net.
So I uninstalled drivers and reinstalled them again - now this PCMCI card is working again. What was the problem???

It crashed!

Yeah, in the middle of Skype conf call, where few people were with SkypeOut and few with regular Skype. I was running many programs at once and tried to get latest data from finance via IE and Skype was running, Edonkey, ftp client, Safari with blog editor, Neo-office, Excel, Entourage and Lotust notes.

So as I was shifting between applications and filling excel with data and suddenly mac just stopped! I hope you never see this screen. In many languages it said, that this machine needs to be rebooted NOW! I found nothing in logfiles later... So I rebooted and continued work, files were recoverable, but still, really annoiyng message.

Later today, after my nap in afternoon, it was humming and screen was black. It did not recovered from that and I had to reboot it again. Is this all because of 10.3.9? Stay tuned, I will write again, if something happens.

Neooffice and Panther patches are installed

Neo-office had 3rd patch coming out to its release candidate version office software.

I also updated Panther to 10.3.9 and no probles occured with Java or other anomalies of wich a lot of people talked in the web.

Also made manual backups to network drive mounted from PC, but one FREE!!! backup tool is also under testing. iBackup will make backups to drive or network mount of all mac preferences etc...

Last patch before Tiger! This sould bring more stability and speed to Safari and Finder.

From Estonian macuser forum I read, that latest 10.3.9 patch may contain some of the Tigers unvisible enchancements.

- There seems to be problems with Limewire. Universal solution is to run permission repear. Or reinstall Java 1.4.2.
- In addition some weird Finder problem.
- Even more, people see problems with Safari plug-ins.

I have heard from friends, that in general you should be very careful with software updates etc... Why repear the system if it is not broken? From curiousity? Well I am sure that I will put the latest Panther patch, after all, then it should be the most ready Panther there is!

Tiger iSync supported devices!

I have Nokia 6820, seems, that I will not have calendar sync support for that? Still unclear.

Also backup solution is not chosen yet. One interesting (only files) is Synk (20$)! Also .mac is an option, but that costs money every month.

MacOS X 10.4 Tiger is probably the most expected and spoken mac operating system. I surfed throught the new functionality and few things are interesting for me.

Probably I will update Panther 10.3.8 to 10.3.9 and wait for first patch to Tiger and then switch to new version.

VoiceOver - I have always wanted to have more interfaces to my computer to automate repitive tasks and ease the mouse load.

Dashboard - More space on desktop is always good thing. Specially space, which is meant for specific applications, which run in the background anyway. I hope it is well configureable.

Powerbook hangs

yeah, this was the second time now (over 1 month)! I mainly put it in sleep mode, when moving etc...

So, here is the logfile, could not find anything special, but when it woke up, but was extremely slow and mouse did not move. Also Orinoco network card was not powered.

Phone sync

My primary phone is Nokia 6820, but few days ago it refused to work (now in maintainence). Also Nokia changed the syncronization protocol to SyncML and iSync does not work with that protocol yet. (possibly corrected in MacOS X 10.4 Tiger)
So now I am using my old T39m, workhorse I bought few years back, when GPRS was launched in Estonia. T39m works fine with iSync and I am able to syncronize iCal and Address Book without problems. Actually there was somekind of bluetooth problem, old pairing did not work, so I had to reset mac (this did not helped) and then created new pairing to be able to syncronize changes. If this bug reappears, I will write more about it.

Updates to Neooffice and MS Office.

Neooffice has matured to Release candidate level (based on openoffice 1.1.4 (download). Also patch to that is released already. In last beta patch I found some unstability, it crashed in printing and sometimes during slideshow modification.

I also downloaded latest updates from Microsoft to MS Office 2004. I am still having an email client/calender/phonesync problem, and have not yet decided which one to choose of two applications (MS Entourage or Thunderbird) I am using currently. Actually three, but for Lotus Notes and must have Lotus Notes mac client 6.5 anyway.
